KCC official Marian Higgins supported the idea. She believes that such evaluations will aid the council in addressing climate change and boosting energy efficiency.
Today, climate change is more pressing than ever. According to a recent report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, global temperatures have already risen by 1.1°C since pre-industrial times. If we don’t act now, we could see unprecedented weather events and disruptions affecting future generations.
Public opinion is shifting, too. A survey conducted by Yale Climate Communications found that 72% of Americans believe climate change is a serious threat. This reflects a broader trend where people are increasingly aware and concerned about environmental issues.
Online discussions reveal a surge in activism. Hashtags like #ClimateActionNow are trending, showing that many are eager to push for change. This growing engagement suggests that people are ready to make climate action a priority.
In light of this, councils and local governments must act decisively. As Heavey and McEvoy suggest, reviewing projects for their environmental impact is a step in the right direction. Failure to prioritize climate action today risks serious consequences for future generations.
