Senator Sarah Hanson Young, the Greens Spokesperson for the Environment and Water, commented on the Albanese Government’s recent announcement regarding environmental funding.
“While the extra funding for conservation is a step in the right direction, $50 million a year is hardly enough to protect our forests and wildlife. We need much more to combat the damage caused by big corporations to our natural world,” she said.
Hanson Young criticized the government for prioritizing coal and gas companies over environmental protection. “Today’s announcement seems like a quick fix. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Albanese is negotiating with the Dutton Coalition to push through laws that could harm our environment further, including the extinction of ancient marine life,” she added.
The senator also highlighted the disconnect between funding and the actual needs. “In comparison to the $12.5 billion in subsidies given to the fossil fuel industry last year, this funding is essentially insignificant. We need real changes,” she explained.
According to a recent report from the International Energy Agency, global renewable energy investments are expected to rise. However, without strong governance and a shift away from fossil fuels, these efforts could be undermined. To effectively protect our environment, Hanson Young believes the government must stop approving harmful projects and provide stronger conservation measures.
“It’s time for decisive action. We call for an end to native forest logging and better protection for our endangered wildlife,” she concluded. As tensions rise over environmental policies, citizens are taking to social media, sharing their concerns about climate change and demanding accountability from their leaders.
In a recent survey by Environmental Politics, 75% of respondents expressed a desire for more aggressive environmental policies from their government, highlighting a growing demand for action among the public.
