Kharmel Cochrane, the casting director for Emerald Fennell’s adaptation of Wuthering Heights, is addressing the debate over casting Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi as the leads. At the Sands Film Festival in Scotland, Cochrane stated there’s “no need to be accurate” because the source material is “just a book,” as reported by Deadline.
Brontë’s novel, set in the late 1700s in Yorkshire, tells the intense love story between Catherine Earnshaw and Heathcliff, an orphan described with dark hair and eyes. Many believe Heathcliff may be of Romany descent, which adds layers to the prejudice he faces.
Historically, adaptations of the novel have often overlooked this aspect. Iconic actors like Ralph Fiennes and Tom Hardy have taken on the role of Heathcliff. Notably, Andrea Arnold’s 2011 version was different; it featured James Howson, a mixed-race actor, addressing some of those concerns.
Cochrane also pointed out that both Howson and his co-star, Kaya Scodelario, were closer in age to the characters, who range in their early 20s throughout the story. In contrast, Robbie is 34 and Elordi is 27.
Cochrane responded to negative comments, including one stating she should be “shot,” by urging critics to wait and see the film. She insisted that adaptations are interpretations of art, not strict lifelike reproductions.
However, her comments sparked a wave of reactions online. One user noted the ongoing issue of whitewashing in media, and another highlighted that Wuthering Heights addresses themes of class and race, making the modern casting decisions particularly contentious.
Elordi recently starred in Fennell’s black comedy Saltburn, while Robbie produced and starred in the hit Barbie, one of the top films of 2023. Intriguing photos of Robbie in a wedding dress from the film’s set earlier this year caused quite a stir on social media.
As adaptations of classic literature continue to evolve, they often stir passionate discussions about representation and artistic license. The new Wuthering Heights film, with its unique casting choices, promises to contribute to this ongoing conversation and offers a fresh interpretation of a time-honored tale.
