Rumors are buzzing that Aaron Sorkin’s sequel to The Social Network is progressing. He seems to have picked two rising stars for the lead roles: Mikey Madison, an Oscar winner, and Jeremy Allen White, an Emmy winner. While no official offers have been made yet, these actors are Sorkin’s top choices for the film.

Sony Pictures hasn’t commented on the news.

Back in June, Deadline reported that Sorkin would be directing and writing this sequel, after contemplating various angles for years. The project is being developed with a strong team of producers, including Todd Black and Peter Rice.

Unlike a typical sequel, this film will continue the story of how Facebook transformed into a global powerhouse. It will take its inspiration from The Wall Street Journal’s The Facebook Files series, written by Jeff Horowitz. These articles, published in October 2021, revealed serious issues within the social network. White might portray Horowitz, while Madison could take on the role of the whistleblower.

Since the sequel announcement, many actors have expressed interest in working with Sorkin, eager for the kind of recognition the original film brought its cast. However, it’s still unknown if Jesse Eisenberg will reprise his iconic role as Mark Zuckerberg. Eisenberg received an Oscar nomination for his performance, yet there are no updates about his involvement.

The Social Network, released in 2010, earned over $226 million worldwide and received eight Oscar nominations, winning three, including Best Adapted Screenplay for Sorkin. The film was based on Ben Mezrich’s The Accidental Billionaires and explored the origin of Facebook.

Sorkin has often mentioned wanting to create a follow-up. The events of January 6, 2021—when the U.S. Capitol was attacked—inspired him, leading him to believe Facebook influenced that situation. For clarity, sources indicate that the new film won’t focus solely on that day but will highlight Facebook’s impact on younger users and its role in global issues.

For Madison, this would be her first major studio role since winning an Oscar for Anora. White is also on the verge of potential acclaim as he prepares to portray rock legend Bruce Springsteen in the upcoming biopic Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere.
