The Recruit is coming to an end.
Netflix has canceled the series, which stars Noah Centineo, after just two seasons. This news comes shortly after the second season premiered in late January.
The cancellation was announced by Colton Dunn, who played Lester Kitchens, a colleague of Centineo’s character, via social media. Netflix has confirmed the decision.
Originally released in December 2022, The Recruit follows Owen Hendricks (Centineo), a CIA lawyer who gets pulled into international intrigue after an asset threatens to expose her ties to the agency.
Created by Alexi Hawley, the show is produced by Lionsgate and Hypnotic. The series faced challenges during the writers’ strike, resulting in a two-year gap between seasons, which may have contributed to its cancellation. Despite being a hit, reaching number two on streaming charts with nearly 6 million views in its first week, it couldn’t hold onto that momentum against other shows.
Season two had only six episodes, down from eight in the first season. Hawley had expressed optimism about a third season just before the cancellation announcement. He noted the good feelings toward the show and Centineo from Netflix.
In season one, Owen becomes embroiled in a chaotic world after discovering a threatening letter from former asset Max Meladze (Laura Haddock), who wants to clear her name of a serious accusation. Owen’s journey takes him across the globe as he grapples with dangerous politics.
Season two ups the stakes as Owen faces off against Nichka (Maddie Hasson), Max’s daughter, who abducts him and causes chaos. As the story unfolds, Owen’s life is constantly under threat, especially from CIA operative Dawn (Angel Parker), leading to intense showdowns. The season culminates in a shocking finale where betrayals and conflicts explode into violence.
The cast also featured Fivel Stewart, Vondie Curtis Hall, Kristian Bruun, Aarti Mann, and others. The series debuted strongly, climbing the Netflix charts and staying in the top ten globally for several weeks.
Despite its short run, The Recruit built a dedicated fan base and showcased Centineo’s growth as both an actor and an executive producer. As fans reflect on the series, it leaves behind a legacy of excitement and intrigue in the world of spy dramas.
