New York Governor Kathy Hochul announced that she will not remove Mayor Eric Adams from office. Instead, she is suggesting a new oversight mechanism for Adams’s administration.
Hochul emphasized the importance of respecting the democratic process. She stated, “I cannot deny the people of this great city the power to make this decision for themselves.”
This decision comes amid chaos at the US Justice Department, following federal orders to dismiss a corruption case against Adams. Just recently, more than seven senior prosecutors resigned rather than comply with the orders of Acting Deputy Attorney General Emil Bove, a Trump appointee. Bove wanted the case against Adams dropped so he could focus on immigration issues.
Adams has faced serious accusations, including allegations of accepting illegal foreign donations for his campaigns and bribery from Turkish nationals. One prosecutor claimed that Adams’s lawyers suggested a deal where he would assist the Trump administration with immigration enforcement in exchange for dropping the charges against him.
These events have sparked calls from several New York Democratic lawmakers for Adams to step down. Although Hochul has the authority to remove him, she chose not to. She consulted with legal advisors and explained that there is a lengthy process involved in such actions, which could significantly impact the city.
Instead of removal, Hochul proposed establishing a new state inspector general to oversee New York City. Meanwhile, a federal judge in Manhattan is still considering whether to drop the charges against Adams.
Critics argue that these developments reveal political meddling during the Trump administration. Adams’s legal team has denied any claims of a deal with Trump in exchange for support regarding the charges. In response to the governor’s comments, Adams expressed his willingness to cooperate with her.
