Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado has declared that her coalition should lead the country following the recent ousting of President Nicolás Maduro by U.S. forces. In an interview with CBS, Machado expressed her readiness to serve the people and credited U.S. President Donald Trump for his role in removing Maduro, claiming it was a crucial step toward restoring democracy in Venezuela.
Despite her gratitude, Trump has publicly questioned Machado’s capability to lead. He remarked that she lacks the necessary support and respect within Venezuela, saying, “I think it would be very tough for her to be the leader.” This dismissal highlights ongoing tensions within the political landscape.
Machado, who has faced challenges, including being barred from running in the 2024 elections, endorsed Edmundo González as a credible successor to Maduro. Her party claims that González won the election, though the official electoral body declared Maduro the president. David Smolansky, a spokesperson for the opposition, emphasized that a stable future for Venezuela is unlikely without Machado and González. He remarked that they could help ensure a democratic transition, something many Venezuelans and foreign governments want.
