Why Pakistan Leads the World in Climate Change Impact: A Deep Dive into Challenges and Solutions

LAHORE: Climate change is the biggest challenge of our time, and Pakistan is among the most affected countries. This message was highlighted by Kanwal Pervaiz, Parliamentary Secretary for Environmental Protection, during a seminar on ‘Ending Plastic Pollution’ at Punjab University.

Pervaiz emphasized the urgent need for action. She noted that the Punjab University College of Earth and Environmental Sciences is taking significant steps to combat climate issues, even more than the provincial government. She mentioned that Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz prioritizes reducing environmental pollution, reaffirming that efforts are underway.

Pervaiz pointed out that human activities primarily drive environmental destruction. For instance, 80% of pollution in cities like Lahore comes from vehicle emissions. Once known as the "City of Gardens," Lahore now suffers from severe pollution. She urged individuals to reduce plastic usage, highlighting its detrimental effects on water and air quality.

Adding insights from experts, Prof. Dr. M. Ali explained that environmental pollution poses a greater threat to humanity than emerging technologies like artificial intelligence. He urged the youth to reflect on their lifestyles and the legacy of natural resources they will inherit. A recent survey revealed that 64% of students are unaware of their daily water consumption, underscoring the need for awareness and change.

Social media trends also reflect this growing concern. A hashtag, #BeatPlasticPollution, has gained momentum, with many sharing simple steps to reduce plastic use. Community engagement and education are essential as we move forward.
