Ladakh’s Ice Hockey Journey: Insights from Coach Mohd Abbass Nordakh
Mohd Abbass Nordakh, a Senior National Coach at the Ice Skating Association of India, believes initiatives like Khelo India are key to boosting ice sports in India. As the President of the Ladakh Ice Skating Association, he’s passionate about developing talent in this unique region.
In a recent chat, Nordakh reflected on his early days. He started ice hockey in school in 1985 when there weren’t many resources for young players. “Back then, we only had two teams, and no proper coaching,” he explained. He learned by watching experienced players, using makeshift equipment like sticks made from tree branches and army shoes modified for skating.
Things have improved, but there’s still a long way to go. Athletes in Ladakh often practice on natural ice, which can be tough compared to the regulated artificial ice used in competitive settings. Nordakh noted, “It takes time for our players to adapt, but they do pick it up quickly.” The unique ice formation in Ladakh, with its natural characteristics, poses extra challenges that players must overcome.
Nordakh took a bold step by leaving the ice rink to pursue coaching qualifications in Finland. He aimed to bring back knowledge and resources to Ladakh. “I realized we needed proper coaching, and I wanted to change that,” he shared. His efforts have begun paying off with initiatives like training camps and equipment donations from international bodies.
In recent years, local teams have shown impressive progress. For instance, Ladakh participated in the Khelo India Games, where they performed excellently and secured a spot among the top teams. With 13 medals, including two golds, it marked a significant achievement for the region. “It was wonderful to see athletes from other states appreciating our efforts,” he said.
Nordakh also emphasized the need for recognition and job opportunities for athletes. “Sportspersons develop skills that can greatly benefit various fields,” he noted. He believes that athletes, especially those who have represented the country, deserve job reservations as they dedicate pivotal years to their sport.
One major highlight in Ladakh is the nearing completion of an artificial ice facility. “This will allow players to train throughout the year,” Nordakh expressed with excitement. He points out that operational knowledge is vital for managing such facilities effectively. He hopes to organize exposure tours for local coaches to learn from successful ice rinks abroad.
He also shared a broader vision for sports in Ladakh. “The new sports policy is a great step,” he noted, referencing the draft prepared by the Union Territory administration. A structured policy can lead to better funding and a sports council dedicated to development, which Nordakh sees as crucial for promoting sports in the region.
Despite the positives, challenges remain. “Ladakh lacks qualified coaches at the national level for winter sports, and having a robust coaching system is essential for growth,” he stated. Even with facilities in place, it is the quality of coaching that can make or break an athlete’s chance to excel.
