Shuhei Yoshida, the former head of Sony’s PlayStation Studios, shared an interesting story about his departure from the role. He revealed that Jim Ryan, the current PlayStation CEO, let him go because he didn’t always agree with Ryan’s ideas. “In 2019, after 11 years, I was fired because I said ‘No’ to some ridiculous things,” Yoshida commented during the Alt: Games event in Australia, humorously reflecting on the situation.
Yoshida and Ryan have a long history, dating back to the early days of PlayStation. “You don’t want to have one of your friends as a subordinate,” he joked, highlighting their camaraderie.
When Ryan took charge of PlayStation in 2019, he made several changes, including shifting Yoshida to a new position focused on promoting indie games. Yoshida, who was behind major titles like God of War and The Last of Us, said he enjoyed this new role.
Ryan passed the first-party studio reins to Herman Hulst, head of Guerrilla Games. Under their leadership, PlayStation underwent significant changes, rolling out the PlayStation Studios brand, embracing live service games, and acquiring popular developers like Insomniac Games and Bungie.
Yoshida moved on from PlayStation in 2025. He now runs Yosp Inc, a consulting firm for indie games. This independence allows him to discuss all platforms, including Nintendo and Xbox, which he finds exciting.
After a transformative period at PlayStation, Jim Ryan left Sony in March 2024, marking the end of an era for the company.
The gaming landscape continues to shift rapidly. In recent years, many indie games have gained popularity, showing that the market is hungry for fresh ideas and innovation. According to a survey by the International Game Developers Association, 35% of developers now identify as indie. This growing trend suggests that Yoshida’s current focus may align perfectly with what gamers want.
