At a recent convocation at Stamford University Bangladesh, environment and climate change advisor Syeda Rizwana Hasan emphasized the urgent need to protect the environment. She warned that if we don’t act now, our children might not recognize the Bangladesh we know today.
Hasan addressed the audience at the Bashundhara International Convention Centre in Dhaka. She spoke about the pressing challenges our country faces, such as air pollution and deforestation. While these issues won’t vanish overnight, she believes consistent efforts can lead to tangible change.
She highlighted that river restoration and legal reforms for environmental protection are already in progress. With the support of the community, these initiatives can move faster. Hasan also stressed the importance of compassion, not just towards people but also towards animals. “A humane society shows kindness to all living beings,” she noted.
Education and family play a critical role in building a just society. Hasan pointed out that despite past injustices, Bangladeshis have always shown a desire for progress. She urged people to stay positive and focus on empowerment, as widespread negativity can stall advancements.
Salehuddin Ahmed, adviser to the Ministry of Finance and Science and Technology, encouraged graduates to take responsibility and serve humanity. He asked them to dream big and dedicate themselves to societal welfare. A total of 1,407 graduates from various faculties received their degrees, with a few earning prestigious gold medals for academic excellence.
This discussion comes at a pivotal moment; according to a recent report by the World Bank, climate change could cost Bangladesh up to 9% of its GDP by 2050 if immediate action isn’t taken. Experts warn that without proactive measures, more extreme weather and rising sea levels pose severe risks to the population.
