In contrast, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated he would meet Putin “any time.” At a recent speech in Russia, Putin described the negotiations positively but underscored existing pressures facing his country.
Ukraine and its allies have accused Russia of dragging its feet in peace discussions. After three rounds of talks in Istanbul, Turkey, no significant progress was made beyond an agreement to exchange prisoners of war.
Zelensky has expressed skepticism over Putin’s intentions, questioning whether Russia genuinely seeks peace or just wants to delay while the war continues. Recently, Russian airstrikes intensified, culminating in a tragic strike on Kyiv that killed at least 31 people, including children.
Former U.S. President Donald Trump condemned Russia’s actions, hinting at new sanctions. His administration has previously set deadlines for peace negotiations—50 days in July—only to see Putin remain unresponsive. When that was shortened to 10-12 days, there was still no action from Russia.
Putin seems determined to continue military advances regardless of external pressure. This was clear when he mentioned that a ceasefire didn’t align with Russian interests. Meanwhile, U.S. officials indicated recent positive discussions about imposing additional sanctions on Russia.
A recent survey from the Pew Research Center showed that public support for sanctions against Russia remains strong in the U.S., with nearly 60% of Americans backing tougher measures. This suggests that, despite mixed responses within U.S. leadership, there’s a general consensus for stronger action against Russia’s actions in Ukraine.
