Amjad Masad, the CEO of Replit, shared some important thoughts about studying computer science (CS) on a recent podcast. He advised young individuals not to choose CS for the money alone. If someone isn’t truly passionate about the field, he suggests they steer clear. “It’s a mistake to enter computer science just because you heard it pays well,” he said.
Masad co-founded Replit in 2016, and the company has evolved from a coding platform to a tool that uses AI for application building. As CS has grown in popularity, Masad noted that many entered the field during the tech boom of the early 2000s for financial gain, rather than passion. However, now, with advancements in AI, the landscape is shifting.
He emphasized that although AI is changing the game, the core principles of CS—like data structures and algorithms—remain crucial. There are still many paths for those interested in tech, especially in machine learning (ML) and AI roles.
Other tech leaders share similar sentiments. Max Levchin, Affirm’s CEO, pointed out that coding is an art form. “AI won’t deliver perfectly crafted code all the time,” he argued, stressing the importance of a solid foundation in CS. Geoffrey Hinton, a pioneer in AI, added that a CS degree is still worthwhile, as it teaches systems thinking beyond just programming.
Interestingly, data from various surveys show that jobs in tech continue to be in high demand. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment in computer and information technology occupations is projected to grow by 15% from 2021 to 2031, much faster than the average for all occupations.
In this rapidly evolving landscape, a genuine interest in CS can lead to fulfillment, regardless of financial incentives.
