As grocery prices rise, many shoppers are turning to private label products for better value and quality. Recent research from Save A Lot shows that inflation is changing how people shop for food.
According to this survey of 600 adults, 79% reported their grocery bills have gone up in the past three months. This has led 55% of respondents to buy more store-brand items compared to last year. To keep up with this demand, Save A Lot has introduced 55 new private label products, including essentials and even pet food under their Oliver & Scout brand.
Sally Fatzinger, Save A Lot’s Vice President of Center Store, emphasizes the blend of affordability and quality in their products. “We’re dedicated to providing both great value and quality,” she said. This focus sets their offerings apart in a crowded market.
The survey also revealed how inflation is affecting social gatherings. Over half of respondents (53%) said they are hosting fewer summer events. For those still planning gatherings, 32% are cutting back on decorations, and 30% are opting for cheaper meal options. This trend shows that many consumers are prioritizing their budgets over festive extras.
When it comes to grocery shopping, price is key. A significant 82% of respondents named price as the most important factor when choosing a store, followed by the quality of produce at 66% and convenience at 54%. Interestingly, nearly half (49%) stated that price was “extremely important” in their decisions. Consequently, 40% of those surveyed said they would likely shop at discount grocery chains, due to rising costs.
“Consumers are clearly prioritizing value, which influences where and what they buy,” Fatzinger commented. Save A Lot wants to be a go-to source for affordable, high-quality food, and their new products reflect that mission.
Founded in 1977, Save A Lot has grown to be the largest independently-owned discount grocery chain in the U.S. Their strategy combines low prices with quality private label items, USDA-inspected meats, and fresh produce. Even as food prices rise, Save A Lot aims to be a dependable choice for families seeking quality without breaking the bank.
The survey was conducted by Pollfish in June 2025, capturing insights from a diverse group of 600 adults. With many consumers shifting their shopping habits, this data sheds light on the evolving grocery landscape.
