The saying “perfect is the enemy of good” rings true, especially when talking about climate action. This year, we hit Earth Overshoot Day on July 24, marking the earliest date yet when humanity’s needs exceeded what our planet can regenerate. This should serve as a wake-up call.

So, why is this happening? We’re cutting down trees faster than forests can grow back, overfishing, and overgrazing land until it becomes barren. The concept of overshoot tries to give a clear picture of our global resource strain.

Earth Overshoot Day is calculated using data from the United Nations. It’s not perfect, but it shows us a critical reality. Mathis Wackernagel, founder of the Global Footprint Network, explains it well. He recently attended a climate conference in Argentina, where many local leaders recognize that climate change is real, even if the national government doesn’t treat it as urgent. Wackernagel believes that focusing on the necessity for change—like the threat of running out of resources—might resonate more than just moral arguments about emissions.

He points out that while global leaders often ignore environmental issues at meetings, the real challenge is preparing for a future where resources become scarce. Statistics indicate that halving our CO2 emissions could push back Earth Overshoot Day by three months. However, as Wackernagel notes, many politicians seem more focused on doing the bare minimum.

Critics of Earth Overshoot Day raise doubts about its methodologies, suggesting it may not accurately portray our resource overuse. Yet despite these criticisms, Wackernagel argues that the science is based on solid UN data. Currently, humanity’s consumption exceeds what our planet can sustainably support, requiring the resource equivalent of 1.8 Earths.
