Why the New Defensive Coordinator Can’t Turn Around the 49ers Defense Alone

The San Francisco 49ers have made a big move in their coaching staff by hiring Robert Saleh as their new defensive coordinator. This is just one step, though; they need to enhance their defense further.

As they look ahead, the 49ers have several defensive spots that need attention, especially in the front seven. This area has been a strong point in the past, but they need upgrades to get back to being dominant.

Last season, the defense faced challenges. The previous coordinator, Nick Sorensen, struggled with adjusting strategies during games. Plus, he worked with a roster that didn’t quite match the 49ers’ high standards.

A key part of the 49ers’ defense is its pass rush. Unfortunately, last year’s performance fell short. According to Pro Football Focus, only Nick Bosa and Maliek Collins made it into the top 80 for pass rush win rate. Without a strong pass rush, Saleh may find it tough to build a competitive defense.

To help Saleh succeed, bringing in fresh talent on the defensive line is a must. They need strong players at both defensive end and tackle positions to enhance the pass rush.

Another critical area is the linebacker position alongside Fred Warner. Last season, the absence of Dre Greenlaw hurt the team’s control over the middle of the field. Without Greenlaw’s agility and instinct, opposing quarterbacks found too many easy passes. If the 49ers can’t re-sign Greenlaw, scouting for a suitable replacement will be vital.

Additionally, they may have openings in the secondary, with Charvarius Ward and Talanoa Hufanga hitting free agency. Ji’Ayir Brown also had difficulties last season, which adds to the urgency for improvements at safety and cornerback.

Bringing in an experienced coach like Saleh can help maximize their current roster. However, to truly challenge for a championship, the 49ers need to revamp their defense across all levels. Each position plays a role in creating a cohesive and powerful defense.

Stay tuned for more updates on the 49ers and their quest for a stronger, revitalized defense!
