Google explains that the Pixel 9a uses a model named “Gemini Nano 1.0 XXS.” This system, introduced with the Pixel 8 and 8a, is designed to be efficient. It only uses resources when needed, processing text input but lacking the ability to handle images or audio. This means the enhanced features of Pixel Screenshots, which allow users to create searchable summaries and add notes, won’t be available.

Many users find value in manually annotating screenshots and organizing them too. Similarly, the absence of call recording features in the dialer is a downside for some.

On the bright side, the Pixel 9a comes with some useful tools inspired by the Pixel 9 series. For example, it offers the Summarize function in the Recorder app. Here, Gemini Nano 1.0 XXS enhances the existing speech-to-text tools, creating transcripts that can be quite handy.

While the Pixel 9 series offers between 12 to 16GB of RAM and runs on the more powerful “Gemini Nano XS,” the Pixel 9a has its standout feature—Pixel Studio. Google’s Pixel Studio utilizes an image generator powered by an on-device model for generating images, making it a fun tool for creative users.
