Why the Steelers Are Confident in Mason Rudolph as Their Starting Quarterback

The Pittsburgh Steelers are in a waiting game regarding Aaron Rodgers, their potential starting quarterback for 2025. There’s no deadline for his decision, which leaves the team in a bit of a limbo.

As of now, Mason Rudolph and Skylar Thompson are the only quarterbacks on the roster. Steelers General Manager Omar Khan has indicated that the team will most likely look for a veteran quarterback, whether that turns out to be Rodgers or someone else.

If Rodgers opts not to join the Steelers, it looks like Rudolph could step into the starting role. Coach Mike Tomlin has expressed confidence in Rudolph, saying he feels “comfortable” with him as the team’s starter. “That’s why we brought him back,” Tomlin shared with ESPN. “He’s a very capable guy.”

Khan also has faith in Rudolph, who recently signed a two-year contract worth $7.5 million after spending a season with the Tennessee Titans. “We had a need at the position… our experience with Mason has been relatively positive," Khan noted.

Last season, Rudolph struggled with a 1-4 record while with the Titans, but earlier in 2023, he had a stronger showing with the Steelers. He claimed three straight wins toward the end of the regular season, throwing for five touchdowns and only one interception while averaging 236 yards per game.

Tomlin acknowledged Rudolph’s growth, emphasizing how he “smiled in the face of adversity.” He highlighted that not only is Rudolph a talented player, but he’s also a great teammate, which is crucial for team dynamics.

While the Steelers are clearly hopeful for Rodgers, they’re preparing for the option of Rudolph leading the team. It’s worth noting that despite the constant change at quarterback—six different starters in recent seasons—the Steelers have still made the playoffs four times in the last five years.

In today’s NFL, having a solid quarterback is critical for a team’s success. As the Steelers navigate this situation, they join the ranks of teams realizing the importance of stability in the quarterback position. Whether they land a superstar like Rodgers or stick with Rudolph, their season will depend on how well they can adapt and build around their chosen leader.
