Tarik Skubal is approaching free agency, and it looks like his chances of extending his contract with the Detroit Tigers are slim. He recently informed USA Today that there have been no discussions about a long-term deal with the team.
Skubal stated, “There is no offer from the team right now. There won’t be an offer until the end of the season. My focus is on playing baseball and winning this year.” This reflects his priority on performance rather than contract talks.
This lack of negotiation is not surprising. The Tigers often use a “file and trial” strategy, where if a deal isn’t reached by the filing deadline, they stop discussions. This year, Skubal filed for $32 million for his salary arbitration, while the Tigers offered $19 million. The arbitration panel sided with Skubal, a significant win for him and his agent, Scott Boras. Experts suggest this ruling sets a new standard for star pitchers during their final arbitration years.
Skubal’s situation is unique. Boras clients typically do not choose extensions close to free agency. If Skubal maintains his performance, he’s expected to secure a record-setting free agent contract, possibly exceeding $350 million. The Tigers may consider discussions around a long-term deal pointless if they aren’t willing to meet this price tag.
Last winter, the Tigers made Skubal a four-year extension offer of less than $100 million, covering his last two arbitration years and first two years in free agency. Given his return from serious injury and winning the AL Cy Young Award, that offer seems low and puzzling.
It now appears that 2026 may be Skubal’s final season with the Tigers, although there’s no evident tension between him and the organization. Both parties are likely focused on winning together this year. Despite speculations about trading Skubal, maintaining a top pitcher like him is crucial for their championship aspirations.
In a move to prepare for life after Skubal, the Tigers signed Framber Valdez for three years at $115 million, with an opt-out after 2027. Together with Skubal, Valdez will head a promising rotation, joined by Jack Flaherty, Casey Mize, and the returning Justin Verlander, who aims to secure a championship with Detroit.
