The launch of the Dream Chaser spaceplane might be pushed back again. Sierra Space is still testing its experimental vehicle. The first Dream Chaser, called Tenacity, is now expected to launch in 2025. However, a NASA official recently hinted that many challenges remain before it’s ready to head to the International Space Station (ISS).

“We still need to complete our safety reviews,” said Dana Weigel, the ISS program manager, during a media briefing. She mentioned that Sierra is working on the required updates. They need to get more details from Sierra to understand their timeline better.

The Dream Chaser project has been in the works for years. NASA awarded Sierra Space a contract in 2016 to handle at least seven cargo deliveries to the ISS. Initially, Dream Chaser was set to debut in 2020, but technical issues have caused multiple delays. Although 2025 is still on NASA’s schedule, Weigel’s comments raise concerns about the timeline.

The Dream Chaser is built to launch into low Earth orbit and then return to Earth, landing on a runway like NASA’s Space Shuttle. It features foldable wings that expand in flight and solar panels for power. Heat shield tiles protect it during reentry.

Weigel pointed out that creating a complex spacecraft involves significant time and effort. “On average, it takes eight to 10 years to get a spacecraft ready for flight,” she noted. This emphasizes the patience required in space exploration.

Aside from SpaceX’s Dragon, NASA hasn’t had much success securing reliable transport for cargo and crew to the ISS. After Boeing’s Starliner faced major setbacks, NASA may be extra cautious about launching Tenacity.

One key task left is the software certification for Dream Chaser. Boeing’s Starliner encountered software problems during its test flight, highlighting how crucial this step is for Dream Chaser.

Another challenge is the launch vehicle. Tenacity will lift off on the United Launch Alliance’s Vulcan Centaur rocket. However, Vulcan has faced its own delays, including a booster issue that postponed its certification. This means Vulcan still needs approval from the U.S. Space Force before it can fly.

As anticipation builds for this next-generation spacecraft, space enthusiasts may need to brace for more waiting. The Dream Chaser represents a significant leap in aerospace technology, but the path to its inaugural flight remains uncertain.

Recent studies show that about 70% of Americans support advancements in space technology, reflecting a strong public interest in what these missions can achieve. This enthusiasm is critical as companies and agencies work to push the boundaries of exploration.
