Why There’s No Upgrade Path for Dragon Quest VII: Reimagined on Switch – What It Means for Fans

During this week’s Nintendo Direct broadcast, Square Enix revealed that Dragon Quest VII: Reimagined will be available for the Switch and its successor, the Switch 2, in early 2026.

However, there’s important news for fans. The official Dragon Quest website in Japan launched an FAQ page stating that there will be no upgrade path from the Switch version to the Switch 2 version. Players will need to decide which platform they want to buy the game for, as no upgrades are planned.

Another key point is that save data for the Switch version cannot be transferred to the Switch 2. If you purchase bonus in-game items, those will also be locked to the console you buy the game on. Essentially, the two versions are treated as separate games, meaning you can’t share or move data between them.

This isn’t the first time Square Enix has set similar restrictions. An earlier FAQ for Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake detailed the same limitations regarding save data and upgrades.

These decisions might not sit well with players, especially given how common cross-platform saves are becoming in the gaming industry. According to a 2023 survey from gaming analytics firm Newzoo, about 68% of gamers prefer titles that allow them to keep progress across different platforms. This suggests that many fans may feel frustrated by Square Enix’s choice.

As gaming technology evolves, players often expect more flexibility. Many see the consumer experience as paramount, raising questions about how companies will adapt to these rising expectations.
