MURRELLS INLET, S.C. — Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. aims to remove six artificial food dyes from American food products to protect children’s health by next year. In response, Stella’s Homemade Ice Cream has already begun removing these dyes from their ice cream.
Some popular ice cream flavors, like cookie monster, will be affected by this change. Owner Haley King started this journey before the ban was officially announced. She wanted to ensure her niece and nephew didn’t consume artificial colors. “My sister is very careful about keeping food dye out of their diet,” King shared.
Now, Stella’s is experimenting with natural ingredients like spirulina and purple plum juice to add color to their treats. King is excited that over 150 of their 200 flavors are already dye-free. “By the end of the season, most of our flavors will have no artificial dyes,” she said.
Most consumers seem to support this change. Gene Hembree, a customer, recalls a time when food didn’t contain harmful chemicals. “In the 50s and 60s, food was simpler. Chemicals like these can be harmful, so I agree with the ban,” he noted.
However, not everyone is thrilled. “I won’t be able to enjoy some of my favorite snacks, like Skittles and Fruit Loops,” said Remy Marion, expressing concern over the availability of some candy. Marie Abrams added, “Using natural products is great, but I’m curious to see how they’ll pull this off.”
King admits that the shop faces challenges. They have no control over candy and cereal used as mix-ins, which still contain artificial dyes. “Cereals haven’t changed yet, so for now, we might have to avoid those flavors,” she explained.
In the larger context, this move reflects a growing trend toward healthier eating options. A 2021 study showed that nearly 90% of parents prefer foods without artificial ingredients, highlighting a shift in consumer priorities. Experts suggest that as people become more health-conscious, businesses will need to adapt accordingly.
King recognizes that this transition will take time but is committed to providing safe, fun options for her customers. The ice cream world may be changing, but Stella’s is excited about leading the way to a cleaner, healthier future.
