KYIV, Ukraine — As tensions rise in the Middle East, Ukraine’s struggle against Russia offers valuable insights into modern warfare. Facing nightly assaults from drones, Ukraine has developed effective strategies to defend itself. The experience gained here is now sought after as Iran targets its Gulf neighbors with drone strikes.
Recently, military facilities, hotels, and residential buildings in the Gulf have been struck, drawing parallels to Ukraine’s ongoing battles. Ukraine faces similar threats, often dealing with drone swarms, especially those made in Iran.
Kyiv’s defense forces are adept at neutralizing many of these drones—not with costly air defense missiles, but with affordable and highly effective interceptor drones. “Our technology has evolved through four years of intense conflict,” says Marko Kushnir, spokesperson for General Cherry, one of Ukraine’s leading drone manufacturers. “We can quickly adapt to new challenges on the battlefield.”
Kushnir highlights that the quick feedback loop between front-line soldiers and manufacturers allows for fast turnarounds on solutions. His company produces nearly 100,000 drones a month, including specialized interceptors aimed at neutralizing Iranian-made Shahed drones.
This expertise comes at a significant cost. Ukraine’s long war has brought hard lessons, illustrating how experience in drone warfare is now crucial. “The only countries that truly understand how to wage this kind of war are Ukraine and Russia,” Kushnir explains.
This capability has not gone unnoticed. Recently, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reported receiving multiple requests for Ukraine’s expertise in air defense and electronic warfare. He stated, “Our experience in countering attack drones is irreplaceable.” This highlights the growing recognition of Ukraine’s role in modern military strategy.
