In the past two years, Space Systems Command has shifted four launches of GPS satellites from United Launch Alliance (ULA) to SpaceX. The next GPS satellite, which was originally set to launch on a Vulcan rocket, will now go up on a Falcon 9 next week. This satellite was already at the launch site in Florida, preparing for a previously scheduled launch, when ULA faced a booster issue back in February. Military officials quickly opted for the Falcon 9, which launches from Cape Canaveral, right next to ULA’s site.

According to military spokesperson Zarybnisky, there are many more potential rocket swaps in the pipeline. “We prioritize based on spacecraft readiness and communicate closely with Combat Forces Command to align our missions,” he noted. There are essential missions that still require the Vulcan rocket, but the aim is to get satellites into orbit as quickly as possible.

Additionally, officials are considering ways to make payloads lighter for Vulcan launches, potentially omitting solid rocket boosters. Garrant mentioned this option for rideshare missions from the Space Development Agency, which is preparing a network of missile-tracking satellites. For example, in a recent SpaceX launch, 21 satellites were deployed in one go, showing the capacity for multiple missions at once. Adjusting the number of satellites could help meet weight requirements for the Vulcan rocket.

Other significant missions are still waiting to launch on Vulcan this year. These include the first in a new line of Space Force missile-warning satellites. These assets, each costing billions, are seen as crucial for national security. Another anticipated Vulcan launch would deliver Silent Barker satellites, part of a broader surveillance effort for the Space Force and the National Reconnaissance Office.

In light of these developments, it’s essential to consider how quickly the space landscape is evolving. Just a decade ago, the idea of swapping major launches between providers was much less common. Experts increasingly argue that partnerships and flexibility will be vital as we step further into an era of commercial and governmental space endeavors.
