Last month, developers for Magic: The Gathering Arena announced their intention to form a union. In response, Wizards of the Coast (WotC) did not recognize the union but sent letters to employees urging them to reconsider.
Several employees shared the contents of the letter on Bluesky. Written by WotC president John Hight, it suggested that unionizing could lead to worse wages and benefits. The management’s wording echoed common anti-union sentiments, referring to the group of workers as a “third-party” and emphasizing a “direct working relationship with leadership.” They avoided directly threatening employees, following the guidelines of the National Labor Relations Act.
Interestingly, union leaders say they have yet to receive any direct communication from WotC as a union. Instead, WotC issued a press statement about the petition and hired Fisher Phillips, a law firm that specializes in employer advocacy, to handle union matters. This has led the union to claim WotC is running a campaign to discourage unionization.
Developers have explained that the push for a union stems from decisions made by WotC and parent company Hasbro that they feel do not reflect employee values. Their main requests include better protections for layoffs and remote work, as well as clear guidelines on the use of generative AI. Recently, they’ve reported strong support, claiming around 75% of their colleagues are in favor of the union.
