Why Xbox’s Newest PS5 Game Struggles at Launch: Insights & Analysis from PlayStation LifeStyle

Just a couple of weeks ago, Xbox released Gears of War: Reloaded on the PS5. This marked the first time this beloved third-person shooter was available on a PlayStation console. Interestingly, it seems that Marcus Fenix’s debut didn’t resonate much with PlayStation gamers.

Recent data from Alinea Analytics shows that Gears of War: Reloaded saw 1.3 million downloads in August across Steam, PlayStation, and Xbox combined. Considering it launched in the last week of the month, that’s a solid start.

However, the breakdown reveals a different story. About one million downloads came from Xbox players, likely due to the game being available on Xbox Game Pass. In contrast, only 241,000 PS5 players downloaded the game, which accounts for just 18.1% of the total downloads. To put this into perspective, Forza Horizon 5 had a much stronger launch on the PS5, racking up over 1.5 million downloads within its first week.

Despite its lower download numbers on the PS5, the game’s reviews are promising. It achieved an average score of 79 on Metacritic across 54 critics. In our own review, we gave it a solid 9 out of 10. “Gears of War: Reloaded is a fantastic entry point for new players and a nice nostalgia hit for veterans,” we noted. It’s impressive to see a game that sparked the cover shooter trend still delighting players.

Gears of War: Reloaded is currently available on the PS Store for $39.99. It has been enhanced for the PS5 Pro, utilizing PlayStation’s Super Spectral Resolution (PSSR) to elevate shadow and reflection quality.

In addition to the game’s current performance, it’s worth noting the landscape of cover shooters. As trends shift, it’s challenging for similar games to capture the same audience. A recent survey indicated that player preferences are moving towards more dynamic gameplay, with 60% of gamers showing interest in new genres.

Overall, Gears of War: Reloaded may not have conquered the PS5 yet, but it still showcases the quality and nostalgia many players cherish.
