California’s governor’s race is poised for uncertainty. According to Secretary of State Shirley Weber, we might not know the winner right away. She pointed out that with many mail-in ballots still coming in on Election Night, a quick decision is unlikely.
In a recent interview, Weber stated, “Probably not given the fact that we have to deal with vote-by-mail ballots.” The election is expected to be complicated, as there are more than 60 candidates, a record in California’s political history. “It is possible” for results to come in that night, she added, but it’s wise not to expect it.
While many of the candidates are less known, the race has eight prominent figures making headlines. Recent polling from Emerson College shows a heated battle among three candidates: Democrat Xavier Becerra, former attorney general; Democrat Tom Steyer, a billionaire make-over from the 2020 presidential campaign; and Republican Steve Hilton, a former Fox News personality. The survey of 1,000 likely voters revealed that 28% support Becerra, 22% favor Steyer, and 21% back Hilton.
Other notable candidates include former Congresswoman Katie Porter, San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan, Superintendent Tony Thurmond, and former Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa. Alongside them is Republican Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco.
Weber also highlighted the importance of voters mailing in their ballots early. Currently, only about 15% of voters have done so, which could lead to slower counting results. “We’ll be as fast as we can, but accurate,” she assured.
On election day, there won’t be any presence from Immigration and Customs Enforcement at polling sites, easing worries for many voters. Weber, along with Governor Gavin Newsom and Attorney General Rob Bonta, is prepared for any unexpected developments, aiming for a smooth election process.
Historically, California’s elections have seen their share of surprises, but officials are hoping for a calm process this time. With many candidates and varying opinions, the excitement is palpable.
