The film is predicted to rake in between $150 million and $180 million from around 4,000 theaters across North America in its opening weekend. This would mark a standout performance after a rough patch at the box office. If it lands on the higher end, it will surpass April’s “A Minecraft Movie” at $162 million and May’s “Lilo & Stitch” remake at $146 million. The first part of “Wicked” made $112.5 million, setting a record for adaptations from stage to screen.
Universal Pictures, which produced “Wicked,” is cautiously estimating a take of $125 million or more for this sequel. While initial estimates were high, reality tempered those expectations. However, excitement is building since audiences are familiar with the story. “For Good” promises to deliver the thrilling conclusion to Elphaba and Glinda’s journey along the Yellow Brick Road.
While “Wicked: For Good” dominates the box office, two other films are trying to capture viewer attention. Sony’s “Sisu: Road to Revenge” aims for about $3 million from 2,100 theaters, a number that mirrors the performance of its predecessor. “Rental Family,” starring Brendan Fraser, is also set to debut in the low single digits from 1,900 locations.
Directed by Jon M. Chu, “Wicked: For Good” continues the saga, spotlighting Elphaba as she faces off against the Wizard (Jeff Goldblum) and Madame Morrible (Michelle Yeoh). The film delves deeper into the darker themes of the story, which might affect its staying power. The original “Wicked” became a massive hit with over $756 million globally, fueled by its catchy tunes and positive word-of-mouth.
As “Wicked: For Good” and Disney’s “Zootopia 2” prepare for their release in late November, theaters are gearing up for a bustling Thanksgiving. The current forecast suggests this weekend could break previous box office records, having set a high last year with $433 million across all films, led by “Wicked: Part 1.”
