The 2025 federal election in Australia is approaching, and the environment is likely to be overlooked in favor of urgent matters like cost of living and healthcare.

In the 2022 election, environmental issues were significant, especially for the Labor party, focusing on climate change and protecting biodiversity.
So, what’s different this time? Will the environment get attention in this election?
On a recent episode of The Briefing, Brendan Sydes from the Australian Conservation Foundation (ACF) shared insights about the importance of environmental issues in the upcoming election.
Labor promised to address climate change, prevent animal extinctions, and create a federal Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Sydes pointed out that polls show Australians want the government to take action on environmental issues.
“People still expect the government to do its part in protecting the environment,” Sydes noted. “These promises matter now more than ever, especially with the ongoing threat to biodiversity.”
With rising living costs, it’s uncertain whether environmental issues will feature prominently in the upcoming campaign. The opposition Coalition, led by Peter Dutton, has not yet shared a clear environmental strategy, while the Teal independents are still advocating for climate action.
The ACF is calling on the government to follow through on its commitments, particularly regarding the establishment of the much-delayed EPA. “We are pushing for these important commitments to be fulfilled,” Sydes added.
