Sanju Samson’s absence from the Indian team for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 raised some eyebrows. The squad, announced in Mumbai, features two wicketkeepers: KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant. Both players are also set to participate in an upcoming ODI series against England.
Samson has been a standout performer lately. He scored two centuries in his last T20I series against South Africa and even clinched a century in his last ODI match back in 2023. With performances like these, many were surprised by his exclusion.
Captain Rohit Sharma confirmed that Pant will be the main wicketkeeper for the tournament. Rahul is expected to play primarily as a batter. This setup suggests that even if Samson had made the squad, he would likely have had limited playing time.
One key factor in Samson’s omission could be his choice to skip the Vijay Hazare Trophy, a crucial domestic 50-over tournament for Kerala. His last appearance on the field was during the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy on December 3, 2024. Missing the Vijay Hazare Trophy may have weakened his case with the selectors, especially since playing domestic cricket is encouraged when players are not on national duty.
Reports indicated that the BCCI selectors were not pleased with Samson’s decision to bypass the Vijay Hazare Trophy. Recently, he was also seen training at the Rajasthan Royals’ high-performance center, which raised further questions about his priorities.
The squad for the ICC Champions Trophy includes an exciting mix of talent: Rohit Sharma (captain), Shubman Gill (vice-captain), Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul, Hardik Pandya, Axar Patel, Washington Sundar, Kuldeep Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, Arshdeep Singh, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Rishabh Pant, and Ravindra Jadeja.
