Paola Castaño-Rodriguez, a sociologist at the University of Exeter, believes that the ISS’s value goes beyond just flashy headlines or significant discoveries. She’s currently writing a book called “Beyond the Lab,” which highlights unique ISS experiments like growing lettuce in space or the twin study of astronauts Mark and Scott Kelly. Castaño-Rodriguez points out that the success of the ISS lies in its ability to demonstrate how to conduct science safely in space, a skill that will be crucial for future missions.

Critics often point to the ISS’s high costs—around $150 billion to date, with NASA spending $3 billion annually to keep it running. While these expenses can prompt skepticism about its value, Castaño-Rodriguez notes that the lessons learned about science operations might be its greatest achievements. “It’s not just about the big discoveries,” she explains. “Every experiment builds the foundation for future knowledge.”

Looking forward, NASA predicts a shift to commercial space stations developed by companies like Axiom Space and Blue Origin. While these new platforms may retain the expertise of many former NASA personnel, questions arise about how their research processes will differ from the ISS’s rigorous scientific standards.

A significant aspect of the ISS was its commitment to open science. All data from experiments was made publicly available, allowing researchers worldwide to access and analyze the findings. There’s concern that commercial stations may not uphold the same level of openness. “Will private companies prioritize accountability to scientific merit?” Castaño-Rodriguez asks, expressing the fear that access may be limited to those who can afford it.

Despite these fears, there is some optimism. The involvement of former NASA staff in these new ventures means that some core principles may still be upheld. Moreover, new commercial stations could still foster international cooperation, opening doors for nations to send their astronauts into space.

Historically, the ISS represented a unique partnership between countries that once viewed each other as rivals. It played a pivotal role in building trust and collaboration in a post-Cold War era, allowing astronauts from different nations to work side by side, even amidst ongoing global conflicts.

As we approach the ISS’s retirement, we won’t just be losing a structure. We’ll be saying goodbye to an era that brought many nations together for a common purpose.
