Despite welcoming around 45 million new subscribers last year, Apple TV+ only captures less than 1% of the monthly viewership on connected televisions in the U.S., as per Nielsen data. In contrast, rivals like Netflix and Amazon have a much larger share, with 8.2% and 3.5% of viewership, respectively.

Analysts believe that Apple has not distinguished itself enough in the crowded streaming market. Horace Dediu from Asymco noted, "Apple is known for disrupting with its hardware, but its content strategy seems lackluster." The company has a solid reputation for innovation, but that hasn’t fully translated into the streaming arena.

Financially, Apple is still thriving, reporting $391 billion in revenue for fiscal 2024, with its streaming segment contributing 21%. Despite this growth, the outlook for Apple TV+ is grim. Experts estimate that it could lose between $15 billion to $20 billion in its first decade.

If Apple decides to shut down its streaming service, it wouldn’t be alone. Other businesses like Google and Amazon have faced similar fates with their streaming attempts. Google canceled its original series for YouTube, and Amazon recently ended its ad-free video service, Freevee. These examples highlight the competitive and often fickle nature of the streaming industry.

As streaming continues to evolve, user preferences and viewing habits remain critical. Preparation for potential shifts in strategy at Apple TV+ could be beneficial, especially given the rapidly changing landscape in entertainment. For now, the future of Apple TV+ hangs in the balance.
