CHAPEL HILL – Freshman Caleb Wilson has quickly become a favorite for North Carolina fans. His latest game against Kansas turned into an exciting “whiteout,” as fans wore white to support him.
Wilson shined, scoring 24 points, leading the No. 25 Tar Heels to a strong 87-74 win over No. 19 Kansas. This victory is promising for future tournaments. The enthusiastic crowd cheered loudly for Wilson throughout the game.
“He truly connects with the crowd,” said UNC coach Hubert Davis. “His energy lights up the room.” Davis was impressed by Wilson’s ability to rally the fans. “If he ran for student body president, I think he’d win,” Davis added, highlighting how quickly Wilson has made an impact.
Wilson isn’t just a player; he’s a crowd favorite. He’s active on social media, engages with fans at campus events, and even took the stage during a Ludacris concert. “I want to connect with the fans because they are vital to our success,” Wilson said. “Performance is key. If I didn’t play well, I doubt they’d be as excited.”
At 6-foot-10 and a star recruit from Georgia, Wilson made an instant impact with his athletic plays, including a powerful dunk to start the game. He contributed significantly in other areas, recording seven rebounds, four assists, and four steals. His passion on the court energized both his teammates and the audience.
UNC senior Seth Trimble felt Wilson’s enthusiasm was infectious. “His energy lifts all of us and gets the crowd into it too,” Trimble shared. This energy was a missing piece for the Tar Heels last year, highlighting Wilson’s unique influence on this new team.
Last season, UNC struggled in a similar matchup, blowing a big lead against Kansas. This year, with Wilson, they rallied from a sluggish first half. After trailing 37-29 at halftime, they stormed back in the second half, scoring 58 points and dominating the boards with 39 rebounds compared to Kansas’s 27.
Wilson wasn’t the only standout; others stepped up too. In the second half, the combination of Trimble, Wilson, and Henri Veesaar scored effectively, making sure the team was strong all around.
Kansas’s star freshman, Darryn Peterson, matched Wilson with 22 points, but it wasn’t enough to keep the Jayhawks in the game. The history between these two teams, including past NCAA Tournament matchups, adds extra excitement to their rivalry. Coach Davis wanted this series to give this new team a taste of high-stakes competition.
