CLARK COUNTY, Ky. — For the second year, the Winchester Police and Clark County Schools are joining forces to fight hunger during fall break with a community food drive.
Captain Steve Charles leads this effort. He knows firsthand the importance of meals for students. As a child, he depended on free school lunches to stay focused in class. “Kids are expected to learn and do well, even when they’re hungry,” he said. “It’s a stress they shouldn’t have to bear.”
The partnership aims to support around 500 students who rely on weekend meal programs. With fall break approaching, Captain Charles is determined to ensure these kids have enough food. “To us, it might just be food, but for them, it’s a lifeline,” he added.
Casey Davis from Clark County Schools shared that some students dread breaks. “They don’t look forward to fall or spring break because there’s often not enough food at home,” he explained.
This year, the goal is to provide three meals and a snack daily for students during the break. “We hope that these meals help families enjoy their time off, making it a happier experience,” Davis said.
Last year, the response was impressive. The community donated enough food to fill all 500 bags and then some. Local businesses, like Amy’s Asian Kitchen, contributed snacks, while individuals went above and beyond, even delivering pallets of food to drop-off sites.
The generosity of the community moved Captain Charles. “When students know they won’t go hungry, it lifts their spirits,” he remarked.
