SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – The Winona State baseball team faced a tough challenge, losing both games in a doubleheader against the University of Mary in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference.
In the first game, the Marauders dominated early, putting up 11 runs while the Warriors managed only 3. They got off to a hot start with a four-run first inning, featuring a two-run homer from Isaac Pegors. They continued to build their lead with consistent hitting, including several doubles and triples. The Warriors fought back with a couple of runs but couldn’t close the gap.

The Marauders led 11-3. Winona State scored their runs thanks to Jack Funke and a balk that allowed Josh Gullickson to score. However, their efforts fell short.
In the second game, the Warriors showed more fight but ultimately lost 7-5. They initially took the lead, scoring three runs in their first at-bat, but the Marauders quickly responded. The game was close, with Winona State’s Easton Arendt keeping the Marauders scoreless for three innings. Despite several chances, including a late home run by Dylan Harer, the Warriors couldn’t clinch the win.

Final score: Winona State 5, University of Mary 7. The Warriors made a strong effort but struggled to capitalize in the final innings.
Individual Highlights
In the first game, Cole Fuecker, Joshua Hawksford, and Gullickson topped the batting stats, each hitting .500. In game two, Harer matched that performance, leading the team in total bases.
When looking at the overall performance, Winona State had 12 hits in the first game, improving to 8 in the second, but overall struggled with a batting average of .167 in the first match versus .286 in the second. The Marauders, on the other hand, had 22 hits in the first game, showing their offensive strength.
While these games were a setback for Winona State, they still have the opportunity to rebound in their upcoming matchups. The final two games of the four-game series are scheduled for Saturday, March 22nd.
The Warriors will need to re-evaluate their strategy and capitalize on the lessons learned from this doubleheader. With the right adjustments, they can find success in the next games.
