Mark Peña, a meteorologist, highlighted concerns about dangerous driving conditions due to potential freezing fog and drizzle that could form overnight.
Winter weather advisories were issued, warning of icy roads and reduced visibility. Peña noted that the risk of freezing conditions would persist into Saturday morning, with temperatures expected to stay in the 20s.
Snow totals varied across the region. Areas like La Plata, Maryland reported up to 3 inches, while other places saw around 1 inch. Such weather prompted school delays and challenges for commuters. The last December snow in D.C. was a significant 2 inches in 2017.
In response to the storm, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser activated the District Snow Team, which worked to salt streets throughout the snowfall. Warnique West, a snow coordinator with the D.C. Department of Public Works, urged drivers to keep a safe distance from snowplows and drive cautiously. Both Maryland and Virginia reported traffic delays and accidents due to the snowy conditions.
As we look ahead, the National Weather Service predicts a dry, cool weekend, with temperatures eventually hitting the low 40s by Saturday. However, another weather front bringing colder temperatures could be on the way Sunday night. The changing weather trends remind us of the unpredictability of winter and the need for preparedness.
