SOUTHEAST Mo. (KFVS) – This week’s winter weather has made it tough for the Southeast Missouri Food Bank to provide meals for those in need.
Snow and icy temperatures forced the food bank to shut down operations for a day. Heather Collier, the Donor Relations Manager, explained, “When we close due to bad weather, it really stresses our operations.”
Even though the food bank was only closed one full day, it still caused issues. “We have to reschedule our routes to deliver food to partner agencies,” Collier noted. Many of these agencies rely on volunteers, so adjusting delivery times can create challenges.
Collier wants to ensure that missed deliveries are made up as soon as possible, but it won’t be easy. “We’re trying to reschedule those, but many won’t happen until later in March. Families who depend on these services have to seek other food sources,” she said. Disruptions in food access can lead to various problems for these families.
This time of year highlights an ongoing need for volunteers. “During the holidays, people are often in a giving mood, so we see plenty of support then. But come January, when it’s cold, volunteers drop significantly,” explained Collier.
The demand for the food bank’s services, however, continues to rise. “We help about 80,000 individuals consistently. As grocery prices increase, we expect that number to grow. Food insecurity is at its highest since 2008, and we see that reflected in our community,” she added.
Despite the challenges posed by winter weather, Collier assured that the food bank will keep supporting the community. “We work quickly and efficiently with partners to ensure food reaches those who need it,” she stated.
