Winter Wonders at the Gospel Mission Food Pantry: How We’re Bringing Warmth and Nourishment to Our Community

MARIEETTA, OH – The Gospel Mission Food Pantry has been busy this winter. The cold season brings more people needing help. Candy Waite, a co-founder of the food pantry, says the demand increases during this time.

“In winter, many people come looking for food, but they also need warm clothing like gloves and hats,” she shared. “We even provide hand warmers and toe warmers for those without homes.”

Her husband, Jeff Waite, also co-founded the pantry. He noted that meat is often the most sought-after item. “Meat is pricey and hard to find for many,” he explained. “We try to keep canned items like tuna and spam available. Sometimes we receive donations of processed deer or packages of hamburger. Those are very popular because people really need meat.”

Individuals who benefit from the pantry reflect on its importance. Dana Poraun, a pantry user, said, “Without this place, many would go hungry or end up on the streets.”

Jeff expressed gratitude for the community support. “We rely on donations from local folks. We don’t receive any financial aid. Without the community backing us, we couldn’t operate,” he said.
