Golden Grizzlies Tennis Recap
The Golden Grizzlies recently faced the University of Redlands and UC Irvine during their spring break trip. They broke their losing streak by defeating Redlands but were swept by UC Irvine.
Against Redlands
In their match with Redlands, Oakland (3-7) started strong, winning the doubles matches convincingly. The team quickly secured a 1-0 lead, thanks to Edie Hammond and Emilia Jarvinen, who won 6-2, and Nisa Bulut along with Oliwia Klimas, who achieved a 6-3 victory.
In singles play, Redlands tied the score at 2-2, but the Grizzlies fired back, winning the final three matches. Hammond dominated her opposing player, winning 6-1, 6-1. Bulut followed with a tough 7-6, 6-4 win. Both Klimas and Jarvinen pushed through tight third sets to clinch their matches, securing a 5-2 team victory against Redlands for the second year in a row.
Against UC Irvine
The match against UC Irvine was a different story. The Anteaters (7-4) were on a roll and swept Oakland 7-0. Despite some close sets, the Golden Grizzlies struggled to secure wins. Hammond nearly forced a first-set tiebreak at No. 4 singles but lost 7-6(2), 6-2. Jarvinen also fought hard, with a close second set that ended 7-5 against her opponent.
Interestingly, Oakland’s performance mirrored their previous season’s trip to California, with the same results against both teams. As Oakland looks forward to Horizon League play, they’re determined to prove their preseason ranking as the league’s top team.
Current Status and Insights
As of now, each player has a mixed record. Hammond, Klimas, and Jarvinen boast 2-2 records, while Bulut also stands at 2-2. Piechowicz and Montreuil are still looking for their first wins of the season.
It’s important to note that in recent seasons, teams that have strong spring break performances tend to carry momentum into conference play. According to a 2022 NCAA report, teams that win non-conference matches before the league games increase their chances of finishing strong.
Looking Ahead
The Golden Grizzlies will return home to host Milwaukee for their first conference match. The anticipation among players and fans is building, and this match could be pivotal for their season.
