World Environment Day 2025: Discover BMC’s ₹17,066 Crore Vision for a Greener Mumbai – Focused on Green Infrastructure, Waste Management, and Electric Mobility!

Mumbai: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has launched its second Mumbai Climate Action Plan (MCAP) with a budget of ₹17,066.12 crore for the fiscal year 2025-26. This release coincided with World Environment Day and marks a significant increase from last year’s allocation of ₹10,224 crore.

The Climate Budget features ₹16,321.33 crore from BMC and ₹744.99 crore from the Brihanmumbai Electricity Supply and Transport (BEST). According to BMC, they have made substantial progress, achieving 86% of their goals in the previous fiscal year.

What’s on the Agenda?

This year’s plan focuses on two main areas: Direct Actions and Enabling Actions. Direct Actions include:

• Installing bio-methanation plants.
• Upgrading the Mahalaxmi Refuse Transfer Station.
• Setting up dry waste collection centers.
• Implementing solar panels in public projects.
• Replacing old lighting with energy-efficient LEDs.

Another important initiative is the construction of 559 community toilets, prioritizing nine wards. The BMC is also taking steps to protect mangroves near the Kanjurmarg Dumping Ground, an area covering 264.87 hectares.

Dr. Ashiwin Joshi, the Additional Municipal Commissioner, highlighted the need to tackle single-use plastics. She noted that the drains often get clogged with more plastic than silt, urging citizens to limit plastic use and adopt cloth bags instead.

Public Transport’s Role

This year, BEST aims to enhance public transport with eco-friendly measures. Plans include procuring electric buses and utilizing renewable energy sources. A total of 27 agencies, including the Mumbai Fire Brigade, are collaborating to integrate green practices in their operations.

As part of a broader inclusivity initiative, BEST plans to offer fare concessions for disabled passengers, pending the necessary approvals from BMC.

The challenges of climate change demand urgent action. Recent studies show that cities with comprehensive climate plans, like Mumbai, can significantly reduce their carbon footprints. According to a report by the World Resources Institute, cities account for over 70% of global greenhouse gas emissions. Active investment in sustainable practices can thus play a crucial role in mitigating climate challenges.

BMC’s dedicated measures demonstrate a strong commitment to making Mumbai greener and more sustainable. By concentrating on both immediate actions and long-term strategies, the city is setting a vital precedent for urban environmental initiatives.
