Tennis star Jannik Sinner, currently the world number one, has accepted a three-month ban for doping. This decision comes after a positive test for a banned substance last year. The settlement was announced by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA).
Initially, Sinner was cleared by an independent tribunal in August. However, WADA appealed this decision to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). Following the recent agreement, WADA has dropped its appeal.
Sinner tested positive for Clostebol, an anabolic agent. He claimed it entered his system through massages from a team member. His eligibility period of ineligibility will run from February 9 to May 4, 2025. He will be able to return to official training on April 13, 2025, which allows him to compete in the French Open starting May 25, 2025.
This incident began after a test during the Masters 1000 tournament in Indian Wells where Sinner lost in the semifinals on March 10, 2024. A second test conducted out of competition on March 18 also detected Clostebol.
In tennis, testing positive for non-specified substances like Clostebol results in a provisional suspension. The standard penalty can be up to four years, but athletes can appeal if they can show that the substance came from contaminated products. Sinner’s past suspensions in April were lifted after he successfully appealed each time.
