Wright State University is welcoming new leadership in two of its key colleges as it gears up for the academic year.
Marty Sexton has been named the permanent dean of the College of Health, Education, and Human Services. She has been serving as acting dean since January 2025 and takes over from Jim Denniston, now the university’s vice president for academic affairs. Sexton is passionate about helping students connect with careers that make a real difference in their communities. “All six of our schools prepare students for professions that improve lives,” she said.
Sexton plans to strengthen partnerships, particularly with Premier Health, to expand student placement opportunities. With her extensive background, including roles at the University of Toledo and her involvement with Premier Health, she aims to enhance programs in behavioral health and child well-being.
Dawn Conway will step in as the interim dean and executive in residence at the Raj Soin College of Business, starting August 4, following Dean Donald Hopkins’ retirement. Conway is not new to Wright State; she was a trustee for several years and has experience as the president and CEO of Boost Engagement, a company focused on employee engagement solutions.
"I’m excited to be part of shaping future business leaders," she remarked. Her leadership experience includes roles at Cision and LexisNexis, where she focused on various aspects of business development.
Experts highlight that the leadership changes align with broader trends in education, where institutions increasingly seek leaders with both academic and practical experience. For example, a recent survey from the Association of American Colleges and Universities found that 81% of employers look for graduates with hands-on experience, confirming the importance of practical training in education.
As Wright State pursues a national search for a permanent dean for the Raj Soin College of Business, the focus will be on finding someone who can continue driving innovation and economic growth. The university’s commitment to fostering community partnerships positions it well for future success as it navigates these transitions.
With these new appointments, Wright State is taking significant steps towards preparing students for impactful careers in both health and business. The combined leadership experience of Sexton and Conway is set to enhance educational offerings and community engagement.
