Wright State University’s indoor track and field teams had an exciting weekend at the Jud Logan Light Giver Open in Ashland, Ohio. They achieved a remarkable 22 Top 10 finishes, setting three new school records and matching another.
On Friday, Oliver Murray made headlines by clearing 4.65 meters in the men’s pole vault, breaking the school’s previous record. He wasn’t alone in making history. On Saturday, Gavin Hutchinson clocked a stunning 1:52.95 in the men’s 800 meters, earning a spot in the record books. Later that day, Hutchinson joined Hunter Thompson, Aiden Clendenin, and Owen Kirkham to set a new school record for the men’s 4×400 relay race with a time of 3:23.23.
In another highlight, Thomas Cook tied his own school record in the men’s high jump, clearing 2.11 meters for the second time this season.
Other standout performances included Eric Dando, who won the men’s 5,000 meters with a time of 14:58.45, and Kaitlyn Miller, who finished first in the women’s 5,000 meters with a time of 17:48.59. Miller also competed in the women’s 3,000 meters on Saturday, securing a fourth-place finish with 10:07.81. Hunter Thompson shone again in the men’s 400 meters, finishing first at 49.37, while Mia Wyngarden took second in the women’s 800 meters with a time of 2:16.73.
Looking ahead, Wright State is gearing up for more competitions, with athletes scheduled for the YSU Last Chance Invitational and the GVSU Big Meet next weekend.
Recent studies show that track and field participation has grown significantly over the past decade, with more athletes than ever embracing the sport. According to the National Federation of State High School Associations, track and field is one of the most popular sports among high school athletes, which contributes to the increasing competitiveness at collegiate events like the Jud Logan Open.
