Political experts believe this situation creates a wide-open field. Melissa Michelson, a political science professor at Menlo College, noted that this gives other candidates a chance to regain focus. Dan Schnur from UC Berkeley mentioned that Swalwell’s exit could encourage voters to explore choices they hadn’t considered before.
Before the poll, Swalwell had the support of 17% of survey participants. With him out, Xavier Becerra gained significant ground, seeing a 15-point surge among Democrats. Michelson suggests that voters might prefer a stable candidate who won’t bring unexpected controversies.
The poll indicates six candidates now have at least 5% support from the 1,000 people surveyed. Republican Steve Hilton leads with 17%. Chad Bianco and Democrat Tom Steyer follow closely at 14% each. Becerra and Katie Porter both had 10%, while Matt Mahan secured 5%.
This dynamic shift is noteworthy. Schnur pointed out that voters may now reconsider candidates they previously overlooked. The opportunities for lesser-known contenders to gain attention is increasing, especially with 23% of voters still undecided.
The upcoming debate on April 22 in San Francisco is a key event. Candidates need at least 5% support to participate, and now Becerra and Mahan have qualified. Michelson believes this improves diversity in the debate, which is essential for engaging voters. “Now it’s not just an all-white panel,” she said. This change may encourage more eligible candidates to join, making the race even more exciting.
As the primary approaches, candidates have a crucial few weeks to sway undecided voters. The shift in dynamics is tangible, suggesting that this election could lead to surprising turns as new leaders emerge in the golden state.
