Microsoft is increasing the price of its Xbox Game Pass subscription. The highest tier, Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, will now cost $29.99/£22.99 per month, up from $19.99/£14.99.

The standard version, now called Xbox Game Pass Premium, has gone up from $11.99/£9.99 to $14.99/£10.99. The most basic tier, previously known as Core and now called Xbox Game Pass Essential, remains at $9.99/£6.99. PC Game Pass has also seen a price rise from $11.99/£9.99 to $16.49/£13.49 per month.

Microsoft explains that the increase is tied to new offerings. They’ve added Fortnite Crew and Ubisoft+ Classics, enhancing the value of the Ultimate plan. Players can also enjoy improved Xbox Cloud Gaming and access over 75 new releases each year, including popular titles like Call of Duty: Black Ops 7.

“Our aim with Game Pass is clear: to offer significant value and a vast library for our players,” the company stated on its website. They mentioned that since its launch in 2017, user satisfaction has significantly increased, with more players engaging with the service than ever before.

Microsoft also recognizes that not everyone has the same gaming preferences. They’re focused on providing flexibility and value, allowing players to access games across various devices, including consoles and PCs.

However, some users have reported issues checking their subscriptions or loading the app after the price announcement. Many are reconsidering their subscriptions in light of these changes.

This price increase follows a recent hike in Xbox Series X|S console costs, which increased by $20 to $70 across the range in the U.S. A recent study indicated that Xbox players typically enjoy more games than PlayStation users, averaging 5.7 titles compared to 3.7. This may hint at a desire for richer gaming experiences within the Xbox ecosystem.

Historically, gaming subscription services have often faced price adjustments as they expand. For instance, Netflix and Spotify have gradually updated their pricing as they added content and features.
