Xi Jinping: Safeguarding China’s Food Security is a Key Political Responsibility

Chinese President Xi Jinping recently spoke about the urgent need for food security in the country. He emphasized that it is a vital responsibility for key agricultural regions.

While visiting northeastern China, Xi underscored the importance of “reform and opening up” to boost the local economy. He encouraged the region to foster a business environment that is market-oriented and follows established laws and regulations.

In his remarks to local officials in Changchun, the capital of Jilin province, Xi stated, “Guaranteeing national food security is the political responsibility of large agricultural and food provinces.” He went on to stress the need for Jilin to embrace modern agriculture, promote high-quality and environmentally friendly practices, and establish strong agricultural brands. He also called for a more varied food supply system.

The northeastern provinces of Heilongjiang, Jilin, and Liaoning are crucial to China’s grain production but are currently facing economic challenges. These three regions, along with Inner Mongolia, contribute to about 25% of China’s total grain output.
