Yale Volleyball Shines Again in Academics and Athletics

Yale’s volleyball team has made headlines once more. They have won their third consecutive Ivy League title and have made it to the NCAA tournament. On top of that, they’ve received the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Team Academic Award for the 19th year in a row.

This award is given to teams that achieve a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.3 on a 4.0 scale. The Bulldogs surpassed that, boasting a team GPA of over 3.5. This achievement highlights how well they balance academics and sports.

Coach Erin Appleman expressed pride in her team, stating, “We take great pride to represent our university on and off the court.” Their efforts are clearly paying off: the Bulldogs won six Ivy League titles in seven seasons and finished last year with a solid record of 19-6.

Interestingly, this year saw a record 1,450 collegiate and high school volleyball programs receive the AVCA Team Academic Award. Jaime Gordon, the CEO of AVCA, noted the remarkable commitment of coaches to help their players succeed in both academics and athletics. “The record-setting successes on the court have extended to the classroom,” Gordon said.

This trend isn’t just about one team; it reflects a growing emphasis on academic excellence in sports. Many athletic programs are now prioritizing education, understanding its importance in shaping well-rounded individuals.

As for the Bulldogs, they’re set to kick off their 2025 season on September 5 at Villanova. With their dedication, they’re poised for more success both in the gym and the classroom.
