Yankees Hold Their Breath: What Luis Gil’s Injury Scare Means for the Team’s Future

TAMPA — Luis Gil is heading for an MRI after experiencing tightness in his right shoulder during a bullpen session. Yankees manager Aaron Boone mentioned that the reigning AL Rookie of the Year will have the exam on Saturday, leaving uncertainty over Gil’s condition.

Boone expressed concern, saying, “He just felt tight and wasn’t able to really let it go. Hopefully, it’s not too serious, but it seems like it could cost us some time.” Gil had a breakout season last year, pitching over 151 innings with a solid 3.50 ERA after bouncing back from Tommy John surgery.

Gil’s injury creates a possible opening in the starting rotation. Marcus Stroman, who had been at risk of not making the team, may now secure a spot. Stroman has made it clear he prefers to start rather than pitch out of the bullpen.

The uncertainty surrounding Gil raises questions about how long he might be sidelined. The Yankees are hoping their rotation remains healthy through spring training. Clarke Schmidt briefly dealt with a back issue last week, but he is set to resume throwing live batting practice. Gerrit Cole made his Grapefruit League debut recently, and new addition Max Fried is scheduled for his first start on Monday.

However, the depth behind the starting five has already faced some setbacks. JT Brubaker suffered broken ribs in his spring debut and will be out indefinitely. Meanwhile, top prospect Chase Hampton recently underwent Tommy John surgery.

If more injuries arise, Will Warren, who has shown promise this spring, could be next in line. Other options include veteran Carlos Carrasco, and minor league pitchers Yoendrys Gómez and Allan Winans.

Despite the challenges, Gil has been working hard this spring. He kept his offseason routine consistent to build on last year’s success. Last year, he won a spot in the rotation against the odds, stepping up when Cole faced injury issues. Gil started strong but only had a minor setback with a lower back strain in August, which didn’t significantly impact his performance.
