Yankees pitcher Luis Gil will be out for at least six weeks due to a severe lat strain. This news came from manager Aaron Boone on Monday. Gil felt some discomfort in a recent bullpen session, and an MRI confirmed the strain.
After the six weeks of rest, Gil will need to go through a rehab process similar to spring training. This could take another six weeks. If everything goes smoothly, he might return by late May or June. This injury opens the door for Marcus Stroman to take one of the starting spots, as he previously stated he didn’t want to pitch from the bullpen.
Besides Gil, the Yankees are facing other pitching issues. JT Brubaker has fractured ribs, Jake Cousins is dealing with a forearm strain, and Scott Effross has a hamstring issue. Rookie Will Warren will likely step in as the team’s sixth starter when needed.
Stroman will join a rotation that includes Gerrit Cole, Max Fried, Carlos Rodón, and Clarke Schmidt. If the Yankees look to add another pitcher from outside the team, veteran Kyle Gibson is currently the best available option in free agency.
At 26, Gil had a standout season last year, winning the AL Rookie of the Year title by finishing with a record of 15 wins and 7 losses, a 3.50 ERA, and 171 strikeouts over 151 and 2/3 innings.
