BOSTON — Recently, New York Yankees players suggested a bold move: wearing alternate jerseys for the first time ever. According to sources from The Athletic, they proposed using their navy batting practice jerseys during some road games. These jerseys sport “New York” on the front in gray letters and come with the Starr Insurance sleeve patch. No changes were suggested for their home or regular road jerseys, which have remained classic throughout the years.
Interestingly, the Yankees have only two official uniforms: white with blue pinstripes at home and gray on the road. The batting practice jerseys resemble the Yankees’ Nike alternate replicas available online, but Major League Baseball hasn’t approved them for game use just yet. Every player currently has these jerseys in their road locker, hinting at their eagerness to embrace this change.
Hal Steinbrenner, the team’s owner, will likely make the final decision. He’s shown some willingness to adapt recently, such as lifting the long-standing ban on facial hair last season. They also slightly changed their road jerseys for 2024, replacing some design elements, and added a jersey sponsor, Starr Insurance, which brings in around $25 million a year.
Notably, the Yankees have never had an official alternate jersey, while every other MLB team has. For instance, the Los Angeles Dodgers introduced a new blue alternate road uniform, breaking from tradition. Additionally, the Yankees are one of only two teams that don’t have City Connect jerseys—a special series created by MLB to highlight local cities.
Several players expressed their excitement about wearing the new jerseys, but their fate is uncertain. Some spoke anonymously, emphasizing it’s not their call to make.
